Leo Club

Learn more about LEOs around the world at the Lions Club International Foundation website!

Over 60 years ago, Lions Club International created a program for young people who wanted to contribute to their local, national, and international communities. They named it the LEO Club using the Latin word for lion which also serves as the acronym for Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity.

A note from Ellie Hanna, LEO Club Faculty Advisor at Newtown High School

The Newtown Lions Club sponsors the Newtown High School Leo Club, which is open to all students of the High School.  Community service is the cornerstone of the Leo Club Program. Like their Newtown Lion counterparts, Leo club members enjoy serving their neighbors and watching positive results unfold.  The Leo Club is very responsive to developing projects that individual members suggest.

Here are some of the projects the Leos have worked on:

  • The Thanksgiving Food Drive affiliated with Trinity Church in town,
  • Helping out at the Audubon Center
  • A coin drive for One Sky, an organization devoted to helping children.
  • Each year we assist with the luminaria for the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Ram's Pasture,
  • Serving at the Boy Scout Blue and Gold dinner, and helping at the Sandy Hook Sock Hop.
  • Our club joins the Newtown Lions for the Pumpkin Race, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, the annual Duck Race and preservation and maintenance of the Orchard Hill preserve.
  • Joining the Leo Club is a great way to meet people and be of service.
